Laos, a Marxist-Leninist state, has issued a postal stamp featuring Ram Lalla, making it the first country to depict a Hindu god on a stamp.

In a surprising and historic move, the Marxist-Leninist state of Laos has issued a postal stamp featuring Ram Lalla, a revered Hindu deity. This makes Laos the first country in the world to issue a stamp depicting a Hindu god. The commemorative postage stamp was unveiled in Laos by India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, marking a significant moment in the cultural and diplomatic relations between India and Laos.

The stamp, which has a value of 50,000 Lao Kip (approximately INR 189), showcases an image of Ram Lalla from the iconic Ayodhya Ram Mandir. This gesture is particularly noteworthy considering the relatively small Hindu population in Laos. Out of a total population of around 7.7 million people, only about 7,000 identify as Hindu.

The issuance of this stamp is seen as a gesture of goodwill and a recognition of the cultural and religious significance of Ram Lalla to Hindus around the world. It also highlights the growing cultural exchanges and the strengthening of ties between India and Laos. The depiction of Ram Lalla on a postal stamp by a predominantly Buddhist country with a Marxist-Leninist government is an extraordinary example of cross-cultural respect and cooperation.

This move has been widely appreciated by the Hindu community and has drawn attention to the shared cultural heritage and historical connections between the two countries. The stamp not only serves as a symbol of the deepening bond between India and Laos but also as a testament to the universal appeal of cultural and religious icons like Ram Lalla. The release of this stamp is expected to boost tourism and interest in the Ayodhya Ram Mandir, further enhancing the global recognition of Hindu cultural sites.
